MSE application to static mixer

MSE Static Mixer

MSE static mixer requires only a short length to mix fluids by its effective structure since it has an extremely simple structure with only stacked mixing elements and other plates. MSE static mixer can be applied as a gas mixer and a liquid mixer.

Configuration of MSE static mixer

MSE static mixer is completed by holding the stacked elements between the blind plates and the middle plate with a through hole and being fixed by bolts and nuts. A fluid can be mixed by installation of the MSE static mixer between flanges. Nord-Lock washers that can safely secure bolted joints are applied to protect from vibration and dynamic loads.

Installation

MSE static mixer can mix a fluid only by installation between flanges in pipe line as shown in Fig. (a).
In the case of installation of MSE static mixer into an existing pipe line, the mixer can be installed easily to a straight pipe line or an elbow with the mixer arranged on only one side of the middle plate as shown in Fig. (b) and Fig. (c).

Visualization of mixing condition by static mixers

A water flow was supplied to a static mixer at 0.5 m/sec. and a high viscosity fluid colored with a fluorescent dye was injected to the water flow at an upstream of the mixer. Outlet flow from the static mixer was fed to a visualization section in which a green laser sheet was irradiated to a transparent acrylic pipe in a vertical direction to the flow. Cross sectional views of the pipe were observed for cases of (1) without a static mixer, (2) with Kenics type static mixer and (3) with MSE static mixer.

Injection of high water-soluble glycerol

Bright areas by colored glycerol is clearly observed without mixer, though it is not observed in both cases of with a static mixer that indicates a mixing is promoted by static mixers.

Injection of low water-soluble 1.5wt% CMC (carboxymethylcellulose)
aqueous solution with a viscosity of approx. 1.9Pa.s


Bright areas by colored CMC solution is clearly observed without mixer as the same with above glycerol injection case. However in the cases of with a mixer, only few bright areas are observed by the MSE static mixer case though many bright areas are observed by the Kenics type static mixer case.
It is obviously the MSE static mixer promotes mixing higher than the Kenics type static mixer.

Injection of no water-soluble edible oil

Large particle of colored edible oil are observed without mixer and with Kenics type static mixer case. Only small particles are observed by the MSE static mixer with its high mixing ability.

Pressure loss

Pressure loss data by MSE static mixer is indicated below. Mixing can be controlled by pressure loss due to the number and specification of stacked mixing elements and arrangements of stacked elements.

A new nipple-type mixer has been added to our lineup of MSE static mixers. The new mixer contains stacked mixing elements in the nipple and can be used by simply screwing it into pipes. It is available in sizes from 8A (1/4B) to 20A (3/4B).

Fluid flow

Mixing elements A and mixing elements B are stacked alternately between a blind plate and a middle plate. The mixing elements A and B are designed with overlapping holes allowing fluid flow supplied into the stacked mixing elements radially.

  • A filter is recommended on the upstream to prevent blocking with particles.
  • Power down the system and confirm no fluid remains in the pipes before removing mixing elements for disassembling the mixer for cleaning.
  • A filter is recommended downstream of the mixer to stop the mixer components when the mixer is accidentally disassembled, although it is securely fastened with bolts and locknuts.
